Winter Skies Asymmetrical Scarf

Free Crochet Pattern: Winter Skies Asymmetrical Scarf

I am thrilled to be a part of the High Desert’s Comfy &Cozy Fall Blog Hop 2020, hosted by High Desert Yarn! From September 27th through October 10th, each day a designer will give a way a free pdf copy of one of their patterns. On October 5th, you can get a free pdf to this pattern. First go to : https://highdesertyarn.com/cozy-comfy-fall-2020-blog-hop/ , and then come back and click the box below to be taken to Ravelry.

I must admit, I am late to the self-striping cake yarn craze. But, while in Walmart a while back, I saw Lion Brand Mandala yarn in the color Spirit and knew I had to make something with it.

I love that this yarn is dk weight, where as most commercial brand cakes are worsted. I also love that it is 100% acrylic, so it is easy care which makes it perfect for items you wear constantly, like hats, cowls and shawls. The color changes are long and they compliment each other. I will definitely use this yarn again. This shawl pattern uses only one cake of Mandala, and it is honestly a smaller scale shawl. It could probably be classified as asymmetrical triangle scarf. I designed it like that on purpose since that is the way I wear it most of the time. But, it is still large enough to wrap around in traditional shawl style. The color changes remind me of the varying shades of the winter skies.

A close up of the v-st pattern

Difficulty: Intermediate

Materials Needed:
I-5.5 mm hook
Lion Brand Mandala yarn in Spirit- 1 skein
or 590 yards of dk weight yarn
Scissors
tapestry needle
Stitches Used:

ch= chain
dc = double crochet

v-st= v-stitch
Additional Terms
v-st- place 2dc in same st
Gauge: 6 ½ v-st and 9 rows= 4 inches

Additional Notes:
This shawl increases one v-st at the beginning of each right side row, starting on row 3.

You can make this shawl as large as you want by continuing the increase pattern, but you will definitely need another cake of Mandala or whatever yarn you are using. I used almost the entire cake for this sample.

PATTERN:
CH 4.
Row 1: dc 2 times in the 4th ch from hook.
Row 2:ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout),dc in between the 2dc below, then v-st in between 2nd dc and beg ch 3 of row below.
Row 3:ch3, dc in 1st dc, then v-st in between v-st(increase made), v-st in between last v-st.
Row 4: ch3, dc in between first v-st, v-st in between each v-st to the end.
Row 5: ch3, dc in 1st dc, v-st in between first v-st. v-st in between each v-st until the end.
Row 6: ch 3,v-st in between each v-st to the end of the row.

Repeat row 5 and row 6 until you have 93 rows total. You should have 47 v-stitches at the end of row 93.

Fasten off.

Weave in all ends.
